"Initiatives such as Neighbourhood Watches and Community Policing Forums have led to a 32 percent drop in contact crimes in the Western Cape", Community Safety MEC Leonard Ramatlakane revealed on Thursday 15 May 2008. Tabling a budget of R228-million for the 2008/2009 financial year in the Provincial Legislature, Ramatlakane said "Communities were the best sources of information and were pivotal partners in the fight against crime".

13 June Fake R200 Notes

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THERE ARE FAKE R200 NOTES IN CIRCULATION WHICH WENT ONTO THE MARKET ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO. THERE APPEARS TO BE A LARGE NUMBER OF THESE NOTES IN CIRCULATION. Each note has its own number and these numbers are from the old series of notes with the thin metal strip and the ex President Governor?s CL Stals signature. All features are present including the fluorescent markings. What to look out for are the following signs:

• The notes are crispy as if new and if seen on their own would easily be accepted as genuine.
• They have the raised 5 dots as per the old notes on the bottom to assist the blind, but if you turn it over you will notice it has been punched from the back.
• The silver strip is a lot brighter than on original notes.
• The fake does not have the threads when placed under UV light.
• On the front the left hand top corner the number will show when under UV (it should not show if it is genuine note).
• They do not stain when rubbed against white paper as the originals do. Be particularly careful when bundles of notes are received as the fake notes could be inserted in these bundles.
